Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam

-

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as Tamil Tigers, was a nationalist militant organisation made up of Sri Lankan Tamils who fought for an independent state of their own. As a result of years of conflict and unfair policies which were put in place by the Sri Lankan government, the Tamil Tigers were created in an attempt to bring equality to the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. Its campaign was simple - to create a safe haven and state for the Tamil people so that they could be free of prejudice and injustice. However this campaign soon evolved into a more violent one where lives were lost in an attempt to create social equality for the Tamil people. The violence and fights during this time evolved into the Sri Lankan Civil War which lasted from 1983 to 2009, when the Tamil Tigers were finally defeated by the Sri Lankan military.

Having been the only militant group in the world to have assassinated two world leaders, former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa, it is clear that the Tamil Tigers had no qualms about resorting to violence to achieve the equality they desired.
