This is an original 1892 black and white halftone print of Kulin (Koolin) Brahmins. The Brahmins were considered to be the highest of society in the Vedic (Hindu) Caste system. In the creation story, it was the Brahmin who were created from the head of the great god Brahma and were destined to do the work of scholars, priests and royalty. The Kulin Brahmin were an even more elite sect of the Brahmin class, however, movements like the Brahma Sabha would make attempts to outlaw the extreme practices of Sati (a woman's self immolation on her husband's funeral pyre) and polygamy. Eventually, after years of social battle, the Brahma Sabha would form a religion known as Brahmoism, that would become more prevalent than the Dharma Sabha, founded by Kulin Brahmins.
