At the age of 16, actress Namitha Pramod made her film debut after appearing in a few renowned television serials, such as Vellankanni Mathavu and Ente Manasaputhri. The actress quickly won over the hearts of Malayali viewers with her girl-next-door characters and subtle acting approach.

Namitha’s first lead role was in Sathyan Anthikad’s Puthiya Theerangal, opposite Nivin Pauly. The audience praised her immensely for her role as Thamara in this movie, which earned her the Amrita Film Award for New Face of the Year.

With over 22 films in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu, Namitha has made a name for herself as an artist who can inhabit any character, whether it be Nitya from Ormayundo Ee Mukham, Adhishta Lekshmi from Adi Kapyare Kootamani, or Dr Geethanjali from Chandrettan Evideya.

In an exclusive interview with OTTPlay, Namitha speaks about her latest projects, business ventures, and upcoming films in 2024.

Both of your new films were released together on December 8. How excited were you about the projects?

Rajni and A Ranjith Cinema- were two distinct genres of films. While the former is a thriller in which I play Gauri, sister of Kalidas Jayaram’s character, the latter is an experimental film directed by debutant Nishanth Sattu. I was glad to contribute to both projects.

Aanu and Eesho were your only releases in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Was the gap intentional?

When it comes to accepting a film, I don't really have many preferences, but I always consider the team behind the movie and my role in it. In terms of 2021 and 2022, I had a lot of other commitments, including my first business, Summer Town Café in Panampilly Nagar, Kochi. My second one, Peprikka, a line of men's apparel and accessories, was just introduced.

Although my team is very helpful, overseeing everything is quite a challenge. There was no such gap since I was occupied with other tasks, along with these two films.

Artists are slowly carving out a space for themselves in the OTT space too, along with theatrical releases. Have you been offered any roles for OTT originals or series in recent times?

My last year’s film, Eesho, was an OTT release, and it received good reception from the audience for its performances and compelling storyline. Regarding working on a series, I had heard a few scripts; however, they didn’t work for me. I even received a call for a Hindi script, but I wasn't sure about my fluency in the language.

According to reports, Adi Kapyare Kootamani and Amar Akbar Anthony might have sequels. What is your take on it?

I've even come across reports suggesting that Vikramadithyan may have a sequel. However, no official announcements or statements have been made regarding any of these projects. I enjoyed playing both roles in these movies, especially Adhishta Lekshmi in Adi Kapyare Kootamani. She played a crucial part that gave the movie a humorous touch.

I had committed to Amar Akbar Anthony in the name of my friendship with Nadirshah and the excitement of working with Prithviraj Sukumaran, Jayasurya, and Indrajith Sukumaran. I would most certainly enjoy reprising these roles if I got a call from the makers.

Can you share your experience working with prominent actors, such as Dileep, Dulquer Salmaan and Kunchacko Boban, from the beginning of your career?

I have been fortunate enough to share the screen with a number of talented performers. I enjoyed working with all. I started acting in films at a very young age, and I was usually cast as characters who were older than I was. Every crew member and artist I have worked with has supported and helped me during that time.

You might be tired of being asked questions about your friendship with Meenakshi Dileep, right?

Yes, I am done with those questions. These days, I inform the interviewer up front that I will not be answering any questions about Meenutty. She is one of my close friends. I have several. I tell interviewers right away that if they want to learn anything about Meenutty, they should call her directly.

What are your upcoming projects?

I have a couple of works, such as Seventh Day director Syam Dhar’s Iravu, suspense thriller Ethire, and a Soubin Shahir-starrer movie, lined up for 2024.
