New Delhi: Ugadi is a significant festival that is celebrated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. According to the Hindu calendar, the festival signifies the start of a new year. It usually falls in the month of March or April, depending on the lunar calendar. It is being observed on March 22, Wednesday, this year. The word ‘Ugadi’ is derived from two Sanskrit words, ‘Yuga’ which means era or age and ‘Adi’ which means the beginning. Therefore, Ugadi means the beginning of a new era or a new age. People of all ages rejoice and celebrate the occasion with immense happiness and enthusiasm.

On the day of Ugadi, people take a bath and wear new clothes. They clean their houses and decorate the entrance with rangolis or colourful patterns. Special dishes like pachadi, bobbatlu, and pulihora are prepared for the occasion. Pachadi, which is a mixture of different flavours like sweet, sour, bitter, and salty, is a special dish prepared on Ugadi to signify the different experiences in life.

People also visit temples to seek blessings from the deities. The day is considered auspicious for starting new ventures, making important purchases, and signing contracts.
