Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee would continue as the West Bengal Chief Minister till 2036 and then her nephew and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee would take over the top post in the state, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh on Sunday.
Addressing a party meeting in Hooghly, Ghosh said, “We are confirming that we will contest under Mamata Didi’s (Mamata Banerjee) leadership and Abhishek Banerjee will be the general. She will be the Chief Minister until 2036 and then the baton will be passed to Abhishek.”
Ghosh’s statement, aimed at shutting down reports of dissonance in TMC’s internal dynamics, came at a time when debate over young brigade vs old guard is rife in West Bengal’s political circles.
The TMC spokesperson also hit out at the Opposition parties and said, “All those daydreaming to capture West Bengal will be unable to meet their quest.”
Taking a swipe at different factions within the state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ghosh said that the saffron party should first decide whether leaders aligned with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and BJP ideology will lead the party or “those leaders who joined it to escape from the CBI and ED”.
“The BJP has to decide if Suvendu Adhikari’s BJP or Sukanta Majumdar’s BJP or Dilip Ghosh’s BJP will fight against the TMC. Because, at the end of the day, there will be only one Trinamool Congress fighting under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and her lieutenant Abhishek Banerjee.”
BJP had fought the last Assembly election in West Bengal under TMC turncoat Suvendu Adhikari. Currently, Sukanta Majumdar is the chief of the West Bengal unit of BJP, while Dilip Ghosh is BJP’s all-India general secretary.
