Canada Day is the day all Canadians celebrate their country on July 1st. What started as Dominion Day changed to Canada Day in 1982 and commemorates the unification of colonies within the British North America Act.

As many know, Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth, and with the British North America Act signed on July 1st, 1867, the Brits and soon-to-be Canadians agreed to unify the colonies of Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

The British North American Act also served as a constitution for the country until 1982. The story of how the country came to be was not like other parts of America where there was massive bloodshed and extreme violence from European colonizers, this day is celebrated as a peaceful transition from a colony to a country.

At first, British Canadians did not identify as that and continued calling themselves British citizens, however with the passage of time this became less frequent, and on the 50th anniversary of the unification of colonies in 1917, Dominion Day became a national celebration.

Canadians wanted to change the name of their national holiday and a bill was drafted in 1946 give a different name to it, but it was stalled in the House of Commons because its members did not agree on what the new name for the celebration should be.

When the country celebrated the 100th anniversary of its creation, the milestone gave way to a newly founded Canadian patriotism and people began calling it Canada Day before it was officially instated by the government in 1982.
