"Lessons from the Tragopan: When the Grass Isn't Greener on the Other Side"

"Lessons from the Tragopan: When the Grass Isn't Greener on the Other Side"

A fantasy short story by me about a Western Tragopan brightly plumed pheasant that is endemic to the northwest Himalayas to tell us a very needed lesson in life...

Once upon a time, in the towering mountains of the northwest Himalayas, there lived a magnificent Western Tragopan. Its brightly plumed feathers dazzled in the sunlight, and its resplendent tail feathers fanned out like a fiery sunset. This proud pheasant had long gazed upon the world beyond the mountains, a world that stretched beyond the treacherous heights of its home. From the cliffs and crags where it roosted, it could see the distant valleys and lush forests below.

When the Grass Isn't Greener on the Other Side

One day, curiosity gnawed at the Tragopan. It had always marveled at the land it saw from its lofty perch but had never ventured down to experience it firsthand. The grass appeared greener, the forests more inviting, and the streams fresher from its distant vantage point. The Tragopan decided it was time to see the ground up close, to feel the earth beneath its claws.

With determination and a beating heart, the Tragopan unfurled its grand wings and descended from the mountain. As it landed in the valley below, it soon realized that the journey would not be as easy as it had imagined. The lush green grass was not as comfortable as it had appeared from above, and the forests held unexpected dangers.

The Tragopan struggled to navigate the thick underbrush, its magnificent plumage catching on brambles and twigs. It encountered predatory creatures it had never seen from its mountaintop, and the streams it had thought pristine were muddied by the passage of other animals.

As days turned to weeks, the Tragopan faced trials and tribulations it had never anticipated. Its vibrant plumage attracted unwanted attention, and it often found itself on the run from predators. It grew weary, its beautiful feathers tattered and muddy, its once-proud spirit beginning to wane.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the Tragopan perched on a precarious branch, it looked up at the towering mountains it had once called home. Its heart ached for the familiar crags, the clear air, and the safety of its nest.

With a heavy heart, the Tragopan realized the truth: the grass was not greener on the other side. Its home, high in the mountains, had provided it with everything it needed to thrive. It was where it belonged, where its vibrant plumage was celebrated, and where the challenges it faced were ones it had learned to conquer.

The next morning, the Tragopan began its arduous journey back up the mountain. Each step was a reminder of the importance of home and the wisdom of staying rooted where one is meant to be. As it reached the summit, its feathers, though still tattered, gleamed with a newfound understanding.

The moral of the story was clear: bloom where you're planted. The Tragopan had learned that sometimes, the allure of the unknown can be deceptive, and it's essential to appreciate and nurture what one already has. It had also learned the importance of staying true to one's roots, for the beauty of its mountain home far surpassed any fleeting desire for something different.

From that day on, the Western Tragopan remained perched proudly on its mountain, its brilliantly plumed feathers a testament to the wisdom it had gained. It no longer longed for distant valleys or distant horizons, for it had found that true beauty and contentment were to be found in embracing one's own place in the world.
