"GMOs have the potential to address issues like crop loss due to pests, drought, and nutrient deficiency." I think they never had this potential on the 3 counts mentioned. Bt cotton promised reduction in crop loss by killing one pest. Even that promise vaporised within months of its introduction. Then and now, farmers continue to rely on hazardous pesticides to control pests. So far, the science behind GMOs was never explained. Agronomic benefits were never realised. But the company sales proved that this is the path for economic salvation for them. India does not need to look at GMOs at all, thus negating the need for balance that is being advocated here.
