To countdown to the new year, and to 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝟯𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗘𝗨 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, we’ll be posting one book from each year to represent our publishing history. Central European University Press aims to offer a pathway to better understand the complexities of Central and Eastern Europe and we hope this brief run through of our collection opens a window into some of the important themes of the last decades.   Starting in 1993, this three-volume Privatization Report brings us back to the era when the press was launched. I occasionally post detailed, real-life examples of unethical conduct in German academia. Most of the perpetrators in these examples are professors, unsurprisingly, because they hold the most power in the system and thus their decisions are the most consequential. They are also protected best from negative consequences that their own actions may have for them. I report these examples using pseudonyms for everyone involved, because my goal is not to denounce specific individuals. My goal is to showcase how great the discrepancy between fancy facades and rotten reality often is, and how defenceless academic institutions in Germany typically are against those who choose to exploit the system’s weaknesses to their own advantage. I intend to make it as hard as possible for those in charge to continue denying the true cost of the show that they run. I invite you to do the same.
