I’ve been practising Design Innovation for more than 18 years and my innovations have hugely benefited my clients and companies to whom i have offered my services. I have learned that it’s critical to understand, explore & prioritize 3 basic aspects to successfully innovate: The idea has to be Desirable, Possible & Viable. In this post, I wish to share my understanding and observations. What is Design Innovation? Design innovation is simply a process of creating new and improved products, services, processes, or systems through the use of design thinking. It involves a deep understanding of user needs & preferences, as well as the ability to leverage emerging technologies to develop novel solutions. It involves different stages such as contextual research, conceptualisation, visualisation and prototyping. Some key principles of design innovation include empathy for users, creativity & experimentation, iteration & rapid prototyping, collaboration & cross-functional teams and willingness to take risks. For design innovation to succeed, firstly it has to be Desirable, secondly it has to be Possible and finally it has to be Viable. When I say Desirable, I simply mean "wanted by users". Possible meaning "technically feasible". And Viable is basically whether the idea is able to "support business goals". Advantages of Design Innovation: 1) Improved Functionality Design innovation can improve the functionality of products or services. By developing new designs or improving existing ones, companies can create products that better meet the needs of their customers. 2) Competitive Advantage Companies that are able to innovate through design can gain a competitive advantage over their competitors. Innovative designs can help companies stand out in crowded markets and attract new customers. 3) Increased Sales Well-designed products tend to sell better than those that are poorly designed. Design innovation can help companies create products that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, leading to increased sales. 4) Enhanced User Experience Good design can improve the user experience of a product or service. By focusing on user needs and preferences, companies can create products that are easier and more enjoyable to use. 5) Cost Savings Design innovation can lead to cost savings in the long run. By creating more efficient and effective designs, companies can reduce production costs, improve product quality, and reduce waste. 6) Brand Loyalty Customers tend to be loyal to brands that consistently offer innovative and well-designed products. Design innovation can help companies build brand loyalty and create a positive image in the minds of their customers. #DesignThinking #paulsandip #influencer #Innovation #paulstudio #ProductDesign #DesignInspiration #UserExperience #DesignProcess #HumanCenteredDesign #DesignStrategy #DisruptiveInnovation #DesignLeadership #incrementalinnovation #designinindia #designedbypaul

Design innovative is misinterpreted by most of the individuals as engineering innovation. Also, companies are not aware of the impact of design innovation. Thanks for sharing such an insightful post.

Design innovation is about creating a Positive interest not just from the user but also from the perspective of the environment around . In todays’ time the role of design innovation is not just to create one sided multiple micro impacts : the markets and users but also the effect it brings across to the meta environment . Design is about behavioural shift which becomes a cultural pivot that eventually directs human quality

Very insightful, especially about the "desirable, possible, and viable" part. As students, we tend to focus only on the desirable aspect, i.e. what the user needs, but often tend to neglect the other 2 which are also crucial for a product to come to light. Might be because we don't focus on the big picture, and see a project just as a project, but it is imperative to evolve and get this ingrained in our minds!
