Founder at Timeless Biosciences | Applying Systems Biology to Enable Precision Diagnostics and Treatment for Complex Chronic Conditions like Long COVID | Metabolism, Mitochondria, Microbiome
🧠 Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, but clinical disease presentations can be diverse, protean, and difficult to manage in more progressive states. Exercise impacts immunometabolism by altering metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, mitochondrial biogenesis, glutamine anaplerosis, oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism. 🏃♀️ Exercise induces metabolic changes in immune cells, including AMPK activation, mTOR inhibition, and modulation of the kynurenine pathway, all of which have implications for neuroprotection in MS. Exercise also positively modulates myokine and adipokine secretion, pro-inflammatory macrophage and effector T cell activity, and oxidative stress levels. 💡Future research may benefit from examining the potential of exercise to serve as an adjunct therapy for MS, alongside pharmacological therapies. 📍REFERENCE: Afzal R, Dowling JK, McCoy CE. Impact of Exercise on Immunometabolism in Multiple Sclerosis. Journal of Clinical Medicine. 2020; 9(9):3038. doi:10.3390/jcm9093038

What happens when you put an engineer in bioinformatics into a clinical research field and give her metabolomics data? 🖥💉 Well, this paper apparently! First scientific publication of many to come. Many thanks to Daniel Murray and Quenia dos Santos Riedel for the guidance and supervision. Also thanks to CHIP Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections @Rigshospitalet for taking me in as a PhD student a year ago, allowing me to continue my adventures into the world of #clinical #metabolomics.
