Town and Transport Planner; working towards a network that enables safe, obvious, and step-free journeys.
Good wayfinding is critical for public transport stops and stations. Today I learnt that Town Hall station in Sydney has about 64 exits when including the four connected retail centres. Credit to Building Beautifully (YT).
Town Hall Station is too confusing. Let's fix it.

Fairfax County has just approved updated parking requirements through their "Parking Reimagined" initiative. This revision to County ordinance includes reduced parking rates for particular uses (including retail, office, and fast food uses), reduced rates for uses located on transit routes, reduced rates for commercial redevelopment...and the list goes on. While not as drastic as some localities (who have struck out parking minimums altogether), this is a promising step in the right direction. Reduced parking mandates help to minimize a community's dependency on vehicular travel, reclaim areas for increased commercial investment, and minimize the visual blight created by seas of vacant parking lots. Well done Fairfax County! https://lnkd.in/eybsNhks

New report: Reducing street clutter in central London Issues with street clutter mean that central London’s pavements are making the capital a worse place to live, travel, visit and work in. What is street clutter? Clutter includes poorly placed or redundant objects on pavements that negatively affect pedestrians or other pavement users. These can include advertising ‘A boards’, unnecessary signage and rubbish bags. Everyone needs a suitable amount of space to move around comfortably, and our research found that street clutter is not just an eyesore, but also actively discourages people from walking in the city centre. This matters especially for people with mobility difficulties, who use wheelchairs, or who are visually impaired, are affected by clutter more than other Londoners. To tackle street clutter, we need national government, local authorities and businesses to take the issue seriously. Our recommendations set out how to de-clutter London so that the capital has the world class pavements it needs to remain an attractive global city for all. In 2021, St. Paul and Minneapolis voted to eliminate minimum parking requirements from their zoning codes after recognizing that strict parking mandates often lead to excessive and expensive parking spaces that aren’t often used, and in turn, negatively affecting the affordable housing market by taking up too much space and driving up rent for tenants. Now, developers are able to build as few parking spaces as they deem necessary without affecting street parking. Read more on the impact of this decision: https://lnkd.in/gWanHFj5

Repealing parking minimums just makes sense, they allow for more space to be used for things like housing and less regulation allows for free market principles to determine how much parking is needed at any given location - it does not mean there will be no more parking spaces in a new building, just a smarter amount of parking spaces not set by decades-old regulation. https://lnkd.in/eqaSXRGZ
