International Anti-Corruption Day 2024: Every year on December 9th, the world comes together to observe International Anti-Corruption Day. This important day serves as a reminder of the devastating impact that corruption has on societies across the globe, and it fuels a collective effort to combat its insidious influence.

The United Nation mentions: “The world today faces some of its greatest challenges in many generations – challenges, which threaten prosperity and stability for people across the globe. The plague of corruption is intertwined in most of them.”

“Corruption has negative impacts on every aspect of society and is profoundly intertwined with conflict and instability, jeopardizing social and economic development and undermining democratic institutions and the rule of law,” it adds.

International Anti-Corruption Day is not just a day of awareness; it is a call to action. It is a reminder that we have the power, together, to create a world where corruption is not tolerated, where resources are used for the good of all, and where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

What is the History of International Anti-Corruption Day?

International Anti-Corruption Day was established in 2003 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). This landmark agreement, the first of its kind, provided a comprehensive framework for international cooperation in the fight against corruption. As part of the UNCAC, the General Assembly also designated December 9th as International Anti-Corruption Day to raise public awareness of corruption and the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it.

The first official observance of International Anti-Corruption Day took place in 2005. Since then, the day has become a global platform for raising awareness of the devastating impact of corruption and mobilising action to combat it.

The UN mentions: “On 31 October 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General designate the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties (resolution 58/4).

“The Assembly also designated 9 December as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it.  The Convention entered into force in December 2005,” it adds.
