Two top Maoists have surrendered before West Bengal Police on Tuesday. Hazari Hembram alias Bijoy and Rani Munda alias Puja laid down their arms at the Belguma Police line in Purulia district. The duo were known to be members of the Dalma squad active in Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha region for the rebels.

Hazari, a resident of Mahalitar under Balrampur police station in Purulia had joined the Maoist squad in 2006. Rani, who hails from Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district entered the rebel squad in 2015.

The two handed over their arms before the Superintendent of Purulia. One 303 rifle and a 12mm bore gun has been recovered from the duo.

"Two active Maoist members of the Dalma squad have surrendered today. They want to return to the mainstream and we shall provide them rehabilitation and support as part of the state government's policy," said Purulia SP Joy Biswas.

Biswas expressed hope that the rest of the Maoist squad members, active across the border in Jharkhand will reciprocate and return to the mainstream too.
