‘No one can snatch your citizenship’: Mamata Banerjee assures Bengal’s Matuas

Mamata Banerjee reiterated her claims that CAA will not be allowed in Bengal and assured Matua community members that no one can “snatch their citizenship”.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached out to members of the Matua community and assured them of their Indian citizenship. Mamata Banerjee asserted that she will never allow the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC)in West Bengal.

At a rally in Krishnanagar in Nadia district, Mamata Banerjee said, “I am assuring the Matua community that you are citizens of India and I am assuring that no one can snatch your citizenship. I will provide land for refugees. I will not allow CAA here.”

Matuas, who make up a large chunk of Bengal's Scheduled Caste population, have been migrating to the state from present-day Bangladesh since the 1950s.

‘BJP WON’T RETURN TO POWER IN 2024’

The Trinamool Congress supremo reiterated that the Bharatiya Janata Party will not be able to return to power in 2024.

“In 2024, the BJP will not be able to form a government. Last time, they had governments in Bihar and many other states. This time they don’t have a government in Bihar and Jharkhand. They won’t win in the north east and in Gujarat also this time they will not be able to match their previous score.”

‘NO INFIGHTING ALLOWED IN TMC’

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee cautioned her party MLAs against infighting.

“I will not allow inner fighting among party members. I will not take you into my party if you indulge in fighting,” Mamata Banerjee said, addressing party workers in Nadia.

Mamata Banerjee is touring Nadia district ahead of the Panchayat elections.
