Maharana Pratap Singh birth anniversary: Twitterati pays tribute to the revered King of Mewar

Maharana Pratap Singh was the eldest son of Udai Singh II and Maharani Jaiwata Bai. He was born on May 9, 1540, in Kumbhalgarh Fort, Rajasthan. The powerful ruler of Mewar was known for his strength and valor. During his father’s reign in 1568 Chittorgarh Fort was conquered by the Mughal emperor Akbar who was also his biggest enemy. After a treaty to solve their dispute failed miserably the Mughals and Mewar became enemies for life. The pressure of Mughals on Mewar reduced after 1579 following rebellions in Bengal and Bihar. Pratap as per earlier reports died due to injuries sustain during hunting. He died on January 29, 1597, at the age of 57. A monument has been built at the site where his funeral was held in Chavand which is a tourist attraction now.

The might with which he fought against his enemies was always referred to by other Kings.  Last year commemorating the birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap the government had released a circulation coin of Rs 100 and Rs 10 respectively. There is controversy surrounding the Battle of Haldighati that he fought with the Mughals in Rajasthan. The battle that was fought for four hours was led by Man Singh I. While many say that Pratap Singh won the battle some believe that Mughals emerged victorious.
