In 'Ayodhya Ram Mandir: Bharat's Quest for Ram Rajya,' author and academician Swadesh Singh dives deep into the history of one of India's historically great cities - Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram', and the relentless 500-year struggle of Hindus in the country to reclaim and rebuild the revered Ram Mandir. The book takes a cut at history dissecting the centuries for the cultural, historical, and religious aspects surrounding the Ayodhya dispute, and that of the temple.

Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram holds a special place in the hearts of millions across the globe but it has had it's own fate mired in miseries for centuries now. The author meticulously details the historical account of how Babar, the Mughal emperor, demolished the temple and erected a mosque in its place. Not just that! Several other monarchs razed the temple time and again and the book's narrative takes us through centuries of Hindu resistance, from conflicts to clashes and struggles for the restoration of the land so sacred to them.

The author's quill covers not only the historical and political aspects but also the cultural, architectural, demographical, and spiritual dimensions of Ayodhya and the significance of the temple city for the country's people. He addresses the legal journey, presenting conflicts, evidence, and the struggle of the Hindu community to reclaim their sacred site. He incorporates court proceedings, ASI reports, and the centuries-long battle for justice, and the outcomes each time, the hordes of people involved in deciding the fate of the temple, with impressive details.

The book expands its scope to include the broader historical context of dynasties, their rise and fall, and the impact of Islamic invasions on the region of Avadh, now Ayodhya. The lineage of Ikshavaku, from which Shree Ram Ji descended, is also traced with a focus on ancestral names. He trails all the places in Ayodhya that have been famous since ages such as Sita ki Rasoi, Kanak Bhawan, Hanumangarhi, Sarayu river, etc. discusses the history and significance of each, and how now these places are to be given their due diligence under the Shri Ram Heritage Walk Project.

He then moves on to to discuss the design, carving, and architecture of the stones and sculptures used in the temple, the minds and hands at work, the time taken, costs involved, providing readers with a vivid image of the grandeur of the newly constructed Mandir. In a devoted section, Mr Singh narrates the contemporary events leading to the inauguration of the grand temple and emphasizes the significance of this historical moment for Hindus who can now worship Shree Ram Ji at the very place of his birth. He next discusses the central government and state government's efforts to transform Ayodhya into a religious hub by putting it on the tourist map of the world. Suffice it to say that when all the plans for the beautification of the great city of Lord ram is materialised, it'll be a spectacle for the world to watch.

Detailed and painstakingly researched, this book has pretty much everything one needs to know about the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. The language of the book is accessible, making it easy for readers to grasp the details; albeit in some places the history opens too vast to remember everything if you're not a history buff. The complete, comprehensive, and contemplative approach make this book a must-read for anyone interested in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir saga. Everything you need to know about the revered Hindu temple is here!

The book concludes on the thought of the tag line - Bharat's quest for Ram-Rajya. After 5 centuries, the Ram mandir is back, Lord Ram is back in his home town, but can Indians expect the same fair and flourishing Ram-Rajya Ayodhya once witnessed? Only time will tell!

1st Book of 2024

I remember reading about Ram Mandir in 2011 descriptively in the newspapers when one of the prominent hearings in the court was going on. That was the first time when I understood the prominence and controversy around Ram Mandir and why it has become so important for certain section of our society – surprisingly the section which counts as majority in our nation. 4 years back, I turned into a Vishnu devotee. At this point of time while I was reading about Lord Vishnu and his avatars and the most famous one – Lord Ram, I realized the importance of Ram Mandir which was due to be built at his birthplace. Luckily, the Bhoomi Pujan happened just after.

Since then, I wanted to know all about its history etc. which I got a great opportunity to finally learn when Swadesh Singh released his latest book this January named “Ayodhya Ram Mandir”. I must applaud Rupa Publication as well for publishing this book as it might have turned into a controversy and despite howsoever secular our nation is, whenever it comes to such sensitive topic, it is objected by certain section of audience whatsoever might be the case. Anyway, talking about the book, it helps us understand the whole history of the establishment of Ram Mandir and its multiple destruction by different rulers of India. It helps us get into the past and know about the psychology of people towards this temple and why it is so prominent even after centuries for the Indian civilization.

The 1st chapter discusses the significance of the land of Ayodhya. Author delves into explaining us about the Ikshvaku dynasty and all its respective kings. It tells how Ayodhya has always been a major part in the history of India. Along with it, author discusses about the different set of rules under which temple and its existence suffered right from Mauryan, Gupta, Mughals and finally, Britishers. The 2nd chapter finally brings us to the modern India where the first case gets filed in the Indian judiciary in the year 1822 and how it kept on struggling in court until 2019. I was surprised to learn how intellectually and smartly Supreme Court rejected the judgment of High court which gave three different parties equal land at the birthplace. It is also a proud moment to learn how Indians accepted the Supreme Court judgment and there was no major case of any violence across India.

In the latter part of the book, author moves towards the current scenario where the construction of Ram temple has begun in Ayodhya and is ready to be open for its devotees to worship Lord Ram in his childhood avatar proudly standing at its rightful location – Lord Ram’s birthplace. Author gets into details and gives an overview on the design, architecture and the whole insight on how the whole temple and the premises will look like. The way author has written the whole part actually makes you visualize the whole temple in front of your eyes. It will make you impatient as the construction of whole temple premises will take some more years for us to view what it is actually planned and aspired to be.

Swadesh also discusses how the development of modern Ayodhya is being planned along with the temple because it becomes very necessary for the whole locality to have different tourist spots for the devotees to enjoy as people come from faraway places and expect every lane to give an essence of Lord Ram’s presence. I am glad the way author narrated about all the existing attractions around Ayodhya such as Sarayu River, Hanumangarhi, Kanak Bhawan, Shri Nageshwarnath temple, Sita ki rasoi etc. Along with this, author also talks about how these attractions shall be further beautified after the temple gets opened for its devotees.

Along with the importance of Ayodhya for Sanatan Dharm, Swadesh speaks about how it is also equally worshipped by other religions such as Jains and Buddhists as well. I wasn’t aware about Ayodhya’s relevance as a spiritual fabric of the nation for multiple religions which the book made me decipher in very easy language. Swadesh has divided the chapters in a manner where each of them talks about a topic specifically which makes the interest alive for the readers and keep them focused towards the subject.

His research and efforts are visible in every sentence as author has deep dived into the subject. He could have made this book difficult for all of us by getting into the legal aspects in the language of our Indian law but he keeps it simple for all the audience to understand and learn from an overview aspect as to how the whole phenomena around Ram temple kept disturbing the emotions of the people aspiring to pray their Lord on his birthplace itself. Also, the book is of around 160 pages hence it becomes easy to go through it in few sittings itself.

Overall, this book is an excellent read specially at this point of time when Ram Temple is already open for all of us. It is going to be a very different experience while visiting Ayodhya after reading this book hence I would recommend everyone to read this one before planning an Ayodhya visit. It will also help you understand when is the best time to be there on the spiritual land based on the development that has been planned by Government along with its timelines. I rate this book 4.5* out of 5.

Thanks!

“Sri Ramachandra Kripalu Bhajuman Harana Bhavabhay Darunam,
Nabakanja-lochana, kanja-mukh, kar-kanja pada kanjarunam.”
When the entire World is waiting for the historical movement of the inauguration of the Ram temple of Ayodhya, I am dedicating my first book review of this year to the holy feet of Ram Lala of Ayodhya,
I know, there are many books on Ayodhya Ram temple, but this book just touched my heart. The book starts with the Ramayana era to trace the history of Ayodhya. After the Ramayana event, there was some flood or some kind of natural disaster that made the city deserted. The city was re-established after it came under the kings of Magadh. Then it traces its history under many empires.
Jayachandra, the last Gahadavala emperor of Kannauj made a grand and magnificent temple of Lord Ram at Ayodhya, which was known as “Treta ka Thakur” temple or Ram Janmabhoomi temple. By the defeat of Jayachandra, Ayodhya came under Islamic invaders of the Delhi sultanate. After Ayodhya came under the Mughal empire, Mughal general Mir Baqi Mir destroyed cruelly the Ram Janmabhoomi temple under the order of the Mughal emperor Babur. Author provided many Indian and Islamic sources of the demolishing of Ram temple. But the Hindus still made their claim for the disputed site as the sacred birthplace of lord Ram. Under emperor Akbar, a raised platform on the disputed site was made, where Hindus could offer their worship.
After the death of cruel Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and the rising of Maratha empire, many Mughal generals broke with the Mughal empire and made their independent empire. Ayodhya came under the Nawabs of Awadh who were very tolerant for Hindus. Their tolerance can be explained by the incident that when a moulavi of Amethi attacked the Hanumangarhi temple with his fanatic followers, the army of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah defeated them and saved the temple from their attack. The Hanumangarhi temple was made by Maratha noble Ahilyabai Holkar along with many temples by the permissions of the Nawabs of Awadh.
Then author described how Ayodhya came under the British rule and how the struggle for reclaiming Indian civilizational heritage started. After Bharat’s independence the building of the Somnath temple at Junahgadh started under the leadership of Bharat’s first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, which had the blessings of Gandhi. With this event, the reclaiming of Bharat’s lost heritage was started. On 1983, the Ram Janmabhoomi movement also gained momentum when Dau Dayal Khanna, a Congress leader raised the concern for liberating Ram Janmabhoomi in a Hindu Sammelan in Mujaffarnagar, UP. Then came VHP, RSS and many Indic organizations. Lal Krishna Advani raised slogans for “Mandir Wahi Banayenge” (We will build the temple in the same site). Then author described the demolition of the disputed structure by the Karsevaks. The book traces the court case, excavation of the site by ASI and finally the verdict that leaded to the reconstruction of the grand temple, the living symbol of Bharat’s cultural renaissance.
The last chapter describes various projects undertook by the UP gov in Ayodhya. It also provided many spiritual sites of interest at and near Ayodhya.
If you have even slight interests in the history of Ram Janmabhoomi temple movement or the history of Ayodhya, this book is a must read for you. It is very fast read and easy to read. I am requesting everyone to read this book. Jay Shree Ram.

The book begins with the history of Ayodhya, showcasing its vast and diverse nature, not only related to the land of Ram but also associated with Buddhism and Jainism. Then, Islam invaded the shores of Sarayu, followed by British rule. The book details the disputes over Janam Bhoomi, primarily focusing on 1852. The number of Muslims attacked Hindus, resulting in casualties. Nihang Sikhs later captured the mosque, performed Pooja, and wrote "Ram Ram." The police recorded the first dispute on November 28, 1858.

The book provides insights into the history of the dispute between Hindus and Muslims over Ram Janam Bhoomi in Ayodhya. It also includes various sources of demolition, which are heart-wrenching. Despite the long availability of these sources, Hindus still have to wait for their Ram Lalla for 500 years. Additionally, the book portrays how Mulayam Singh, the CM of that time, delivered a words of revenge again advani rath yatra to ayodhya by mentioning " PARINDA BHI PAR NAHI MAAR SAKTA ", highlighting the killing of Kar Sevaks. The documented number is 18, but THE NUMBER IS MUCH HIGHER THEN THIS.

To be honest , Reading this book evoked both pain and anger in me. However, the conclusion is that "the end is always good."
The book is well-written, easy to understand, and concise, providing true insights into the struggle of Ram Janam Bhoomi. Additional things like the historical places in and outside the ayodhya has tempting me to go and see the real beauty . Overall i just wanna say

Ayodhya Ram Mandir: Bharat’s Quest for Ram- Rajya

I liked the way author skillfully waves the 500 years of history and the religious struggle for re-establishment of lord Rama's temple. The infamous conflict was avoided with such graceful narration by the author unfolded with historical evidence making a riveting story crafted from painstaking research.

The captivating unbiased commentary of ongoing incidents was penned with fine compassionate language and along with Ram's popular stories across the world which added a poignant hue and served as an engaging element.
I enjoyed the historical evidence.

Significance mentioning in history gave me chills, such a profound and vibrant history, it was an interesting exploration.

Not only as Ram's birthplace but ayodhya holds significant position in the history of other religions books , jain , Buddhism and the remarks it left in travellers account like hiuen tsiang, witnessing such evidence was a thrilling experience for anyone.

The way the author described this ancient city gives me a fascinating experience.
Jain literature refers to ayodhya in various names, the more I was reading it I felt goosebumps, such a rich history author unearthed meticulously.

Very enticing history of Ayodhya and remaking the journey of the ram temple kept me occupied the last few days.
The culmination of a century old skirmish is now embodied in that gorgeously crafted temple.
An excellent read.
