Nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Sicily, it's no surprise that over the centuries this tiny island was heavily fought over thanks to its advantageous location. More recently though, Malta has become a holiday hotspot for Northern Europeans looking for clear seas, sunshine and some of the most beautiful architecture thanks to its rich and complex history.

So, if you're unfamiliar with the pearly beaches and turquoise seas - sold yet? - we've run down our favourite reasons to visit this phenomenal country and a few things you may not know about it yet.

  1. The official languages of the island are Maltese and English, so for those linguaphobic Brits out there - fear not you'll be able to get by in your mother tongue.

  2. Throughout history, Malta had the nickname, 'The Hospital of the Mediterranean', due to its prominent role as a place for healing and medical treatment. So if you are in need of some classic R'n'R, the warm climes and fresh food certainly make it a place to check out for those who need to recharge the batteries.

  3. Not to hammer the point home or anything but for history buffs, Malta is a treasure trove of gems - not least because of the Megalitihc Temples of Malta, which are thought to be the oldest free-standing structures on Earth. Yep… ON. EARTH. Impressed yet?

  4. For us sun-hungry Brits, the Maltese summer lasts about eight months from mid-April with temperatures climbing to 35oC - which are nice numbers where we're sitting from (read: our desk).

  5. Hiring a car is a doddle in Malta - and they drive on left, too. Phew!

  6. Maltese cuisine is strongly influenced by Sicilian and English food, as well as Spanish, Maghrebin and Provençal ones too. So in short; it's basically the most delicious food, ever.

  7. According to a 2010 study conducted by Charities Aid Foundation, Maltese were the most generous peoples in the world, with 83% contributing to charity. Now if that doesn't want to make you want to visit, I don't know what will.

  8. No need to book a flight to The Bahamas, with Malta's safe clear waters (there are no tides or dangerous currents) warm sea temperatures and beautiful underwater wrecks and reefs, diving is a must-do activity when visiting the island.

  9. Waterpolo is BIG in Malta, so if you're a sports fanatic, don't forget to take in a match.

  10. Whilst you're unlikely to escape your Will.I.Am and Katy Perry tracks blasting on the radio, traditional Maltese music includes what is known as għana - which if you can catch, you definitely should. A type of folk music is played in the background while a few people take it in turns to argue a point through the medium of song. With totally improvised lyrics, the idea is to create a debate and it takes a heck of a lot of practice to be able to combine the required artistic qualities with the ability to debate effectively.

Yep. That's it. We're off. See you in Malta, guys.
