While Japan is famous for its cherry blossoms, South Korea offers its own unforgettable cherry blossom experience. Known locally as "beotkkot," the cherry blossom season in South Korea transforms the country into a breathtaking palette of pink, beguiling both locals and tourists alike. The 2024 bloom season for these beloved blooms is expected to be particularly stunning, with experts estimating that this year’s flowering with arrive seven days earlier than normal.

Those who always like to be the first to a big event will want to head to the lovely island of Jeju, where the blossoms can be seem as early as March 24. Those in the capital city of Seoul will have to be a bit more patient as flowers aren’t expected to show themselves until April 3rd. Luckily, no matter where you are in the county, South Korea offers lots of opportunities to witness the pink-hued spectacle. Here are five of the best places to go to experience cherry blossom season in South Korea.

Simni Cherry Blossom Road

Located in Hwagae, this spot is legendary for its stunning spring time blooms. Local legend has it that if young lovers stroll along the road with hands clasped, their love with remain true and they will be bound together for a century. The legend has earned the popular promenade, which is often peppered with amorous couples, the moniker of “wedding road.”

Gyeonghwa Station Cherry Blossom Street

Located in Jinhae, Changwon, Gyeonghwa Station Cherry Blossom Street was once a functioning railway station that has been transformed into one of the most picturesque cherry blossom viewing sites in the country. The lovely trees line the rail tracks creating a jaw-dropping cherry blossom display. Train enthusiasts will also want to take a look at the Jinhae Publicity Center, which exhibits old retired trains, adding a touch of historical charm to the scenic beauty of the cherry blossoms.

Seomjingang Cherry Blossom Trail

This gorgeous trail in Gurye follows National Roads 17 and 19 and meanders along picturesque Seomgjingang river. Stretching out for nearly two miles, the trail is lined with cherry blossom trees first planted over thirty years ago. Considered one of South Korea’s most beautiful roadways, it also makes a photo-worthy hiking option for those who prefer to take in the incomparable views on foot. Eateries along the trail are particularly famous for serving local specialties like euneo hoe (raw sweetfish) and minmul maeuntang (spicy freshwater fish stew).

Jeju Island

Jeju Island, just off the southern coast of South Korea, has some of the most coveted cherry blossom views in the country. The island is particularly famous for its King Cherry Trees, which have the largest blossoms and are reputed to bloom so intensely that the branches seem to be covered in snow. One of the best places to witness this unforgettable display is at the Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival held in Jeonnong-ro, Jeju City.

Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Festival

Usually running anywhere from the last week of March into the first weeks of April, this festival takes place in one of South Korea's most historic and culturally animated cities. Visitors can stroll through ancient streets and verdant parks soaking in the spectacle of hundreds of cherry trees in full bloom. Highlights include the area around Bomun Lake and the ancient Daereungwon Tomb Complex, where the soft pink blossoms contrast enchantingly against the stark historical monuments and traditional architecture. The Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Festival not only pays homage to the captivating scenery but also features a variety of cultural performances, traditional games, and local food stalls.
