West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of turning the entire country into a “detention camp” and pledged to scrap the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) if the opposition bloc INDIA comes to power.

Speaking at an election rally in support of four TMC candidates in Assam, Banerjee warned of dire consequences if Prime Minister Narendra Modi wins a third consecutive term, alleging a threat to democracy.

The TMC supremo also asserted her party’s commitment to religious harmony and vowed to repeal all discriminatory laws if INDIA bloc emerges victorious.

“If the INDIA bloc wins, there will not be the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Uniform Civil Code. We will repeal all discriminatory laws,” Banerjee said at the rally.

Banerjee urged support for all four Trinamool Congress candidates in Assam’s Lok Sabha polls and also announced plans to contest all 126 assembly seats in the 2026 state elections.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), enacted in December 2019, offers Indian citizenship for Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian religious minorities fleeing persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, but excludes Muslims. Assam has been witness to violent CAA protest in the recent times.

The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases beginning April 19. Counting of votes will be on June 4.
