George Seurat (1859-1891) was a French painter, the founder of Neo-Impressionism. He invented and used the technique of pointillism or divisionism, which was the composition of a painting from small dots of colour. Pointillism sought an internal regularity that would determine the placement of colors in a painting. Seurat's approach to painting, in which he sought to merge artistic and scientific perspectives, influenced many of his contemporaries and also found followers. Artistically, Paul Signac was closest to Seurat and Pointillism.
