An army soldier was killed by stone pelters in South Kashmir on Friday.

Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar, said the 22-year-old Sepoy Rajendra Singh was a part of the Quick Reaction Team which was providing security to a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) convoy on October 25.

"At around 6 pm, when the convoy was passing through the Anantnag bypass tri-junction near National Highway 44, few youth hurled stones at the vehicle and Sepoy Rajendra Singh was injured after being hit on the head," he said.

Colonel Kalia said Singh was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to 92 Base Hospital but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries. "Sepoy Rajendra Singh hailed from Badena village in Pithoragarh, Uttrakhand and had joined Army in 2016. He is survived by his parents," he said.

The mortal remains of the martyr were flown for last rites to his native place, where he will be laid to rest with full military honours.

"In this hour of grief, the Army stands in solidarity with the families of the brave hearts and remains committed to their dignity and well being," the Colonel added.

The killing comes a day after the Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik claimed a decrease in stone pelting incidents and violence because of the people's changed attitudes.

"There is a decrease in violence, recruitment of youth into terrorist ranks and stone pelting. It's not because of me, it's because the attitude of the people has changed," he had said.

Sepoy Singh is perhaps the first Armyman to have been killed by stone pelting in Kashmir, though several police, paramilitary and civilians have been killed by stone throwers.

On May 27, nineteen CRPF men were injured, one of them seriously, when their vehicle turned turtle near Bemina in the outskirts of Srinagar. Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers were killed and another injured when their vehicle turned turtle after they came under attack from a large mob of stone throwers at Hillar village of Kokernag in south Kashmir's district of Anantnag on April 4.

On May 7, a 22-year-old tourist from Chennai was also killed when his vehicle was caught in stone pelting at Narbal area en-route to famous ski resort of Gulmarg.
