Reality TV has come to Texas youth football and the early results look terrifying.

Crying children, overzealous parents, helmet-to-helmet hits and intensity-filled coaches are all part of a preview trailer for the new show “Friday Night Tykes,” which debuts on the Esquire Channel Jan. 14.

“You have the opportunity today to rip their freakin’ head off and let them bleed,” yells one coach to his team of 8 and 9-year-old players in the Texas Youth Football Association.

“There should be no reason you don’t make the other team cry,” demands another.

In the promo video that shows several head-to-head hits, one coach is seen instructing a player to lead with his helmet, saying “if that kid comes across I want you to put it in his helmet, you understand? I don’t care if he do he don’t get up.”

“Yes sir,” is the response.

It’s a show sure to cause some controversy but one that also has the potential to be captivating.

Esquire’s website describes the show as such:

“With exclusive access to the 8 to 9 year-old Rookies division of the Texas Youth Football Association, this 10-part docuseries follows five teams on and off the field during the 2013 season. Throughout, coaches and parents offer insight into why they believe they’re teaching valuable lessons about discipline and dedication, but also grapple with serious questions about parenting, safety and at what price we’re pushing our kids to win.”

More promo videos are available on the show’s website.

The direction the show ultimately takes is still unknown. It could prove to be educational, but almost certainly will stir up conversation and sharp opinions about football culture.
