Chor Bazaar

stores to visit in Mumbai’s

A capsule of objects belonging to bygone eras, this
market in Bhendi Bazaar is still the first place
shoppers and film set designers go to while scouting
for things like retro telephones, radios, posters and
antique furniture. Here are some stores to look out for
on your next shopping trip to Chor Bazaar:

The Hesperus

The store stands out for its literary title
(Hesperusis Greek for the planet Venus) and its
display cabinet filled with vintage-style bottles of
all shapes and sizes. Inside you will find shelves
of lamps, curios, mirrors and chests that look as
if they’ve been stripped from a ship.
103 Mutton Street.

Taherally’s

Like many shops in Chor Bazaar, Taherally’s keeps
several categories of antique objects. What
immediately got our attention was its stack of old,
boxy leather suitcases in blue, green and black.
 28 Mutton Street.

Camera House

Old Rolliflex and Pentax cameras line the walls
ofthis cupboard-sized shop. They also sell vintage-
y sunglasses and black and white photographs
that must once have been in albums belonging
to Parsi families.
137 Mutton Street.

Just A Glance

We found great period cabinets, marble-toppedtables
and cane and wood chairs at this antiquefurniture store.
75 Mutton Street.

Lucky Corner

There’s great brassware to be found at this
cornershop, from tiffin boxes and hanging plant
pots to birdcages and decorative bells.
82 Khara Tank Road.

Al-Anwar

This one is among the several lamp shops on Mutton Street that deal in antique – real and faux – lamps
and shades. If you’re redecorating with a vintage theme
in mind, the store is worth a visit.
121 Mutton Street.

Abdul Gani Ebrahim

Look out for a shop front full of clocks and you’ll
know you’re there. Aside from antique clocks of all
kinds, the store sells gramophones and old radios.
133 Mutton Street.

Hadi & Co

Real antique furniture and faithful knock-offs as well as chandeliers and porcelain vases can be found at this store.
102/104 Mutton Street.

Mini Market

One of Chor Bazaar’s most famous shops, Mini
Market is a trove of period tchotchkes such as old
 advertisements, film posters, antique jewellery,
glassware, tin boxes, coins and figurines.
33/31 Mutton Street.

Dada Kasam Mansuri

Chandeliers, tin items, cameras, clocks, gramophones
and old watches share shelf space here. This is also
the place to come if you want to sell off the
antiquated knick-knacks gathering dustin your loft.
135 Mutton Street.

Chandeliers House

As the name suggests, the shop sells all manner of
light fixtures. But what caught our eye was a stack of large
blue and red enamel bowls that are hard to come by.
105 Mutton Street.

Royal Art

Collectors of china figurines will have a field day
among the Oriental dolls, animal figures, crockery
and lamps that fill the display cases here.
109 Mutton Street.

Bollywood Bazaar

The store has a little bit of everything: metal
ware, gramophone records, Hindi film posters,
tin boxes, carved wooden brackets, masks, glass
bottles and miniature figurines.
38 Mutton Street.

Murtuza Husain Jhoomerwale

The display cabinets practically frosted with dust
contain an impressive variety of bell-shaped lamp shades.
116 Mutton Street.

90 Mutton Street

The address is the only signage marking this shop,
a narrow yet roomy warehouse stuffed with terrific
 antique furniture and well-executed reproductions.
We found Bombay fornicators, vintage desks,
mirrored cupboards, coffee tables, bookshelves,
stools and even colonial bird baths.

Bought and Sold

The shop has a terrific selection of what were
probably once useful metal items. Now, perhaps they'll
best be used as decorative pieces. We’re talking
about large brass and enamel kettles, brass buckets,
metal cooking utensils and tiffin boxes.
40-A Mutton Street.

A1 Corner

This little shop spills out onto the street with Bollywood
posters and stills. Here you will find posters of films
that only diehard movie watchers are likely to remember
, such as the 1970s movies Rootha Na Karo, starring
Shashi Kapoor and Nanda, and Samaj Ko Badal Dalo.
99 Mutton Street.
