Every night at the magnificent Golden Temple in Amritsar, after the reading of the holy Rehras Sahib and the Hukamnama, the Palki Sahib (the platform where the Guru resides) is carried into its “bedroom” in the Akal Takht. While many prefer visiting the temple at dawn, this daily ritual at night is a sight to behold. Crowds are typically smaller and hymns echo through the marble walls as the holy book is carried away. It’s hard to tell when it's best to visit the Golden Temple but at night, the shimmering gold and pristine white of the structure shines brighter than ever.

As the sun sets, the holy reading of Rehras Sahib begins. Though timings vary based on the season, the last Hukamnama typically takes place right after, at about 9.30pm
