The UAE may be less than 45 years old, but the seven emirates’ history stretches right back, according to Dubai Museum, to the third millennium BC. Located within Al Fahidi Fort, which itself was built in roughly 1787, Dubai Museum has existed and been educating visitors about the sandy city since 1971. Some of the exhibits may look a little dated, but on the whole it is surprisingly fascinating—probably because Dubai’s own story, from small pearl-fishing village to the futuristic record-breaking skyscraper city we know it as today, is pretty mind-blowing. The best bit? The boat sailing across the ceiling.
