Grew up... the Boss’s protégé. Before earning the title of Big Boss, John, or Naked Snake, was the apprentice and surrogate son of The Boss, “The Mother of Special Forces.” However, he was eventually forced to kill her to ease U.S.-Soviet tensions, a traumatic event that he never fully recovered from.
Living... in Outer Heaven. Having become a legendary soldier himself, Big Boss established his own military fortress. Initially known as Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders), or MSF, it was eventually rechristened Outer Heaven.
Profession... mercenary commander. As leader of Outer Heaven, Big Boss recruits aimless soldiers of fortune from around the world to serve him. The group then offers its services to whomever might be in need of a private army.
Interests… creating a world for soldiers. Being forced to kill The Boss shattered Big Boss’s faith in his country. So he dreams of a world where soldiers are respected and are only loyal to themselves and each other, not pawns of war, nations, economies, or ideologies.
Relationship Status... single. Big Boss did have a romantic encounter with Chinese triple agent Eva during his mission in Russia. Eva would later be used as a surrogate mother for Big Boss’s clone sons Solid Snake and Liquid Snake.
Challenge... evading the Patriots. While Big Boss pines for a world of military freedom, The Patriots, a shadowy cabal compromised of his former allies, believe that The Boss’s final will was to create a global society where conflict was highly controlled. So Big Boss stays under the radar amassing as much might as he can to one day take on these secret masters of the world.
Personality... disillusioned. As he says, “The day I killed The Boss, I was already dead.” And as his life has gone on, Big Boss has only become more bitter toward the increasing corruption and conspiracies around him. But even as his methods grow harsher, he never lets go of that hope for freedom.

Metal Gear revolves around a special forces operative codenamed Solid Snake who goes into a solo infiltration mission into the fortified state of Outer Heaven to destroy Metal Gear, a bipedal walking tank capable of launching nuclear missiles from anywhere in the world. The player must navigate the main character, a military operative codenamed Solid Snake, through various locations, while avoiding visual contact and direct confrontation with patrolling guards. If the player is seen, the game enters the "Alert Mode." In this situation, Snake must escape from enemy's sight in order to resume infiltration. The player starts the game unarmed, but eventually acquires firearms such as a Beretta 92F and an M79 grenade launcher, as well as explosives such as remote control missiles and landmines. Weapons can not only be used to kill enemies, but also to clear obstacles such as hollow walls and electrified floors. Snake can also use his fists to punch and defeat patrolling enemies. Occasionally, if the player defeats a guard with punches without alerting anyone, the defeated guard will yield a single unit of rations or an ammo box that can be picked up. In addition to enemy guards, the player will also be confronted by mercenaries who will challenge the player to combat, serving as the boss characters.

MPO is the fourth Metal Gear title made specifically for the PSP and the first one to retain the series' action-based play mechanics. It is the first canonical outing of the Metal Gear Solid series for a portable platform, following the storyline of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Set in Colombia in 1970, six years after the events of Snake Eater, the game follows the exploits of Naked Snake after his former unit, FOX, goes renegade. The game also chronicles the eventual founding of FOXHOUND and The Patriots, as well as the inspiration of the military state Outer Heaven.

Ground Zeroes is the first Metal Gear Solid title to offer open world gameplay. Ground Zeroes offers total freedom of play: how missions are undertaken is entirely down to the user. There are no restrictions or boundaries. Players use intelligence and cerebral strategy to sneak their way through entire missions, or go in all guns blazing. Side-Ops missions range from tactical action, aerial assaults and "covert" missions that will be sure to surprise.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the first game in the series to take place in a jungle. This unique setting created an opportunity for new mechanics. The player can adapt to the environment by swapping Snake's camouflage, hunt animals and gather plants for food. Like other Metal Gear games, the focus is on stealth, but the player can go through the entire game like a shooter if they choose to. Throughout the game Snake acquires weapons of all types; non-lethal firearms, handguns, sniper rifles, machine guns, shotguns, sub-machine guns, and explosives. Adding to the survival elements of the game, Snake Eater lives up to its name by requiring the player to scavenge food for Snake.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a story-driven adventure game, with seasoned hero Solid Snake drafted for one final mission. Set across stages including the Middle East and South America, the now aged Snake has been asked to assassinate his old adversary, Liquid Ocelot. To do this, however, he must make his way through a series of battlefields, using his legendary stealth abilities and all-new OctoCamo suit to avoid detection and to reach his target. Metal Gear Solid 4 rounds out the Metal Gear saga with a fittingly cinematic and gripping final outing.
