Volvo XC90 R-Design is a sporty looking Swede in Detroit

Volvo's latest 2015 XC90 represents a huge shift for the brand with an all-new platform underneath and the latest Drive-E engine family for power. At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the brand is showing off its sporty take on the crossover with the R-Design trim.

Mechanically, the R-Design carries over from the rest of the XC90 lineup, but the changes to the body do let the crossover look a bit more aggressive. Up front the grille gets swapped out for a unit with horizontal slats, and the redesigned lower air dam incorporates an extra middle intake for a meaner style overall. The side mirror covers also get matte silver replacements, and at the rear, rectangular exhaust outlets huddle into a lower apron. The version on display in Detroit makes the whole design even more attractive by painting the Volvo in satin-finish blue paint.

While the exterior gets some brawniness, the interior cossets drivers in luxury. The upholstery is covered in a mix of Nubuck and Nappa leather, and there's R-Design trim for the gearshift, pedals, floor mats and illuminated tread plates. Even the infotainment system features a unique theme.

This XC90 is for buyers looking for a touch more sport from their Swede, at least in the model's looks. Get an idea of how it matches its assertive design with a comfy interior on the floor in Detroit.
