• For the sake of the boy's health, the boy's mother keeps a strict fast during the entire day on Ahoi Ashtami. They go the entire day without consuming any water. After seeing the stars at twilight, the fast is broken. It can be challenging because the moon rises late on Ahoi Ashtami night because in some places the Ahoi Ashtami fast observer breaks their fast after seeing the moon.
• Women take a bath before rising. They then make a "Sankalp," or commitment, to maintain the fast for the entire day in order to protect their children. Before dusk, the puja's preparations are finished.
• On a wall, women have drawn the likeness of Ahoi Mata. The artwork should be drawn with eight corners, or "Ashtha Koshthak." In accordance with Ahoi Ashtami's tale, there once was a moneylender who resided in a city. His son's number seven. The family was once busy cleaning the house with only seven days until Diwali. The moneylender's wife went to a nearby open pit mine to gather mud for their home's repair. The moneylender's wife began searching for mud without realizing that a hedgehog had constructed a den in the mine. Her hoe struck a hedgehog cub in the process, quickly killing it.

The moneylender's wife was deeply saddened by this. She went back to her house, brokenhearted. Due to the hedgehog mother's curse, the woman's oldest son passed away a few days later, followed by the second and third sons. In one year, all seven of the woman's sons passed away.

The woman began living a very depressing life as a result of losing all of her children. She sobbed as she confided her tragic tale to an elderly neighbor one day, admitting that the cub had been accidentally murdered and that her seven boys had perished as a result of the sin she had not intended to commit. The elderly woman consoled her after hearing this by telling her that half of her sin had been atoned for by her repentance.

The woman further asserted that she would benefit on the day of Mata Ahoi Ashtami by turning to Goddess Bhagwati, painting a picture of a hedgehog and its young, adoring them, and expressing regret for her actions. The woman said that all of her faults would be forgiven by God's grace if she did this.

The moneylender's wife revered Mother Ahoi and obeyed the elderly woman. She began consistently fasting on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month, and over time she conceived seven boys. Since that time, Ahoi Ashtami vrat has become a tradition.
