Indira Gandhi is fondly remembered as the Durga who won India its first decisive military victory in centuries and the strong stateswoman who had the courage to look American bullying in the eye and not blink. Equally, she is remembered as the terrible dictator who imposed the Emergency and tried to destroy institutions ranging from her own party to the judiciary; she is seen as the source of many of the problems that afflict Indian democracy today. Even so, for politicians Indira is the very definition of a strong leader, and a role model on both sides of the aisle. In this spellbinding story of her life, journalist Sagarika Ghose has excavated not just Indira the iron lady and political leader but also the flesh-and-blood woman. Born in 1917, Indira soon found her life swept up by Gandhi s call for freedom and swadeshi. Her family home became a hub of the national movement and Indira marinated in a political environment from an early age. But she also saw politics of another kind. Her sickly mother and she were the target of unkind attacks from her aunts. And her celebrated father, who had no patience for illness, was desperate to sculpt his daughter into his version of perfection but Indira simply couldn t keep up with his expectations. Despite Nehru s disappointment and dismissiveness, Indira rose to become the unquestioned high command of the Congress and, indeed, the most powerful prime minister India has ever had. This no-holds-barred biographical portrait looks for answers to lingering issues: from why Indira revoked the Emergency to her son Sanjay s curious grip over her; and from her bad marriage and love affairs to her dangerous religious politics. This is the only book you need to read about Indira Gandhi.

Sagarika is a great writer who brings the complex Indian history during the Indira era to reality through this amazing book. Lots of trolls writing negative reviews here based on personal agenda.

Made the mistake of reading this book written by somebody who received quite the largesse from this corrupt politician - Ms. Ghosh's father was running the propaganda channel named Doordarshan during successive Congress regimes. The book is full of half-truths and inaccuracies. Mrs. Gandhi is most known for making corruption a way of life in India. Please spend your time in something a little more productive than reading this garbage.

Indira was decisive. This is a must read book in an era of Modi spin. An era when cows are protected and humans are not. When polity, split into castes and sub castes & religions, is being spun by big data technology harnessed for the wrong objectives. Sagarika is a bold antidote daring to swim upstream and describing an Indian leader that lead in a different time when patriotic nationalism meant winning the war of nerves in Bangladesh.. not the narrow definitions of nationalism being quoted today.

Very biased and silly book. If you read the book, half way, one could makeout the false narration and failed attempts of the writer to show Indira in good light. The facts cannot be changed , Indira was no less than a Hitler with scandalous life style and zero economic benefits to India.

It's more of a PR stunt than an Autobiography. Such books fails writing as well as the writer. Am not surprised this book got bad reviews, wish I would have read them in advance..

I don't understand how people can even praise a person who was a dictator and murdered 1000s to retain her power, impose emergency and push her totally unqualified sons down the throat of Indians whom she and her family kept uneducated. This takes sycophancy and Sagarika Ghose has got all that is required. Do not waste your time and money on this book.

A journalist who is in business just to serve a family now writes a book with bias. No investigative journalism and facts. Daily sycophancy converted into a book. Lack of objectivity makes it a dull book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great human being, and bravest leader of India.
Reviewed in India on July 16, 2017
Good book with a lot of details about Mrs. Gandhi and tried to be almost complete from her beginning to her death. The book clearly focussed on the personality of Indira Gandhi. I could relate how life keeps changing your vision as one gets older and older. I have seen that happening with my grand father and father.

There are lot of positives and negatives in every human being, so is Mrs. Gandhi. After finishing the book I felt that the positives that she stood for, and the very idea of India she was protecting like a mother was the most positive aspect of her life. I think she took the responsibility to her own shoulders.

Coming back to the review: The book has paid attention to including lot of details. But it had left out some of her achievements in establishing R&AW, and the nuclear program, and how she was trying to keep Pakistan away from nukes. The author could have avoided using "three dots" in many places, which is a bit annoying at times.

Even though I was thinking that Emergency was the wrong idea to the problem at hand, I now think that it can be completely justified as I learned that Mr. Morarji Desai won Pakistan's highest honor Nishaan-e-Pakistan in 1990. The answer to the question made me think that Indira was right when she thought that foreign hands were involved in destabilizing India.

Another thing I learned about Mrs. Gandhi is that she did walk the talk at many important junctures of her life. I cannot imagine any leader being so brave to keep her Sikh body guards after Blue Star, against IB's advice. She proved that she was secular with her life. I don't have that kind of courage, so are many of our leaders today.

1.0 out of 5 stars Thw writeup is more of Hero worship and pleasing a particular family n party
Reviewed in India on July 3, 2017
It is not a biography of Indira Gandhi but a narrative based on hero worship without any real facts. Author stays away from highlighting any shady parts of her life. The writeup is more towards pleasing a particular family of a particular political party. Not sure whg author has to do this? Total waste of time and money. Will not recommend this to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
Reviewed in India on May 28, 2019
The reader gets an insight of the life and time of Indira Gandhi as a child and later as a PM. However, the opinion of Sagarika Ghosh in every chapter is a spoil sport. It interupts the chain of thought. This book is written really well. Barring the opinion of the author, rest is a fabulous work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing biographical sketch of Indira Gandhi
Reviewed in India on January 3, 2018
Amazing biographical sketch of Indira Gandhi, by Sagarika Ghose. From the very first page, the book takes you to the journey of the life of this alpha male. The use of sources and evidences is also very quenching. I would say, this book is a must for all those interested in politics or knowing about the iron lady of India who once stabalized the political doldrum of India.
