Asim Mukhopadhyay half man goes to the very heart of the Naxalite movement in Bengal, with special emphasis on the infamous cossipore-baranagar massacres in North East Calcutta in August 1971. The novel also focuses on the horrifying repression of lakhs of displaced people in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra during the Narmada bachao Andolan in Gujarat. In the novel, The massacres are witnessed by an innocent village youth of South Bengal, semi-literate but intelligent and wise beyond his years through his experiences, poor but courageous, who is tortured, humiliated, thrown out of his village and chased from one place to another and is ultimately turned into a social activist who realizes that the tail of the gecko is not the system. The people are the system. They must be changed, in their way of living, thinking and fighting evil. This is a hard-hitting and brutally honest effort to focus light on India s teeming millions who are kept forcibly hidden by vested interests.

With impeccably good English, accompanied by new coinages, maxims, phrases in between the lines, the author enters the heart of Darkness into the infamous Massacres of 1971 makes vivid the scathing incidents as if occurred yesterday. Read it twice to imbibe the reinvigorated lustre of Indianness in all the chapters of novel. thanks to the publisher Niyogi Books to bring it out to the reading public.
The Half Man is worth keeping in my library. Mastery over different episodes beginning from ‘The Journey’ to the end chapter ‘Uncle Lossu’e Cabin’ is the soul of the novel. The sub title of the book is ,I think an appendix, should have been dropped as the 268 pages book illustrates in details the unparalleled vandalism committed against the river Narmada, one of the prominent rivers in the country and lakhs of people in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. He has also discussed the wanton loot of bauxite and repressions of tribal in the hills of Odisha and all this he has done through essaying a novel, full of thrills, violence, romance, love and betrayal with precise details, the dexterity of Leonardo De Vinci and wisdom of Sartre. I firmly believe the publishers and readers are well aware of the real worth of such a masterpiece. I am eagerly looking forward to have another such extraordinary work from Mukhopadhyay, the maestro.
The naming of the chapters strikes me also, such as ‘Anaconda in Poet’s nook’, ‘Cremation of the Ches’, ‘Dormant Volcanos’ , ‘The European Ghost and his tribal Wife’ reveal a bone –shattering tragedy of the mass. A fresh lease of life, I relished from reading the book over the last few weeks. I thank the Publishers. Waiting for more such.

Fantastic novel

As I was reading the book it seemed I was sitting face to face with the author. Asim Mukhopadhyay is an author who can outclass many others we often speak of. The tragic scenes at the cremation group in Calcutta , the laughing club at the city ( first part) , the killing of land mafia in Jabbalpur ( second part) and minings in tribal villages and the last chapter , Uncle Lossu's Cabin made me cry ,shiver and laugh. Mukhopadhyay is the ideal novelist of India's ordinary people.

Its a modern classic story.
Mr Mukhopadhyay has disclosed many facts about the "Narmada Banchao Andolan" which were unknown to us.Same about the bauxite loot in odisha's hills.
His writing skill has depth love for common people but he is very much impartial in short a really a great novelist
