Increase in demand of Energy fuel in the market has alarmed the world to seek for other alternative in the energy sector. Use of Shale Gas as an Energy Fuel is another addendum in the energy market which will certainly abridge the demand of fuel crisis to a certain extent. Shale gas has the potential to turn the world’s energy industry on its head

Natural gas extracted from organic rich Shale rock Formations has become the fastest-growing source of Gas in USA and could become a significant new global energy alternative unconventional source. Although the energy industry has long known about huge gas resources trapped in organic rich shales, it is over the past decade that energy companies have combined two established technologieshydraulic fracturing and horizontal drillingto successfully unlock the tight and shale oil/gas resource. A recent study by EIA (Energy Information Administration) assessed 95 shale gas basins in 41 countries. India is one of the countries covered in this study along with China, Canada, Mexico, Australia etc. With current available data, the initial estimates of technically recoverable shale gas resource in these countries is 7299 TCF. Although the energy industry has long known about huge gas resources trapped in organic rich shales, it is over the past decade that energy companies have combined two established technologies-hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling-to successfully unlock the tight and shale oil/gas resource. At present, the shale gas is not exploited in India. Encouraged by the USA results and preliminary USGS assessment, Govt of India is seriously contemplating to carry out detailed exploration, followed by phased extraction. Preliminary estimates from different agencies suggest that risked gas-in-place of 290 TCF with technically recoverable resource of 93 TCF is tenable in established hydrocarbon basins of India namely, Cambay Basin in western India, the Krishna-Godavari Basin along the east coast of India, the Cauvery Basin in southern India and Damodar Valley Basin in northeast India. The unlocking of domestic shale gas reserves could help India meet its growing energy demand, besides reducing its dependence on expensive energy imports. In addition, the development of the domestic shale gas industry could boost the Indian economy.

Conventional oil resources are depleting. Exploring shale gas, hence, has become our paramount interest. Technical, safety, and environmental standards for hydro-fracturing process including prevention of collateral damage to other geological resources, sourcing water and disposal thereof has to be taken into consideration. The high potential of shale gas as source of natural gas has made it a vital key in today's energy hunger race. This paper projects Krishna-Godavari and Cambay basins as new frontiers for shale gas exploration in India. To commercialise shale gas, we need to overcome the challenges involved and study the economic implications. Various government and private organisations are carrying out in depth research to evaluate prospects for shale gas in India.

Environmental issues such as water contamination, air pollution and the potential for earthquakes are analyzed in comparison to the leading energy fuel—coal. The United States and global energy security impact of shale gas is assessed by a brief comparative analysis of the United States and United Kingdom regimes while discussing whether there is a need for a special regulator for the industry. Socio-economic and global issues that regulators may wish to address are discussed.

Shale gas: a step toward sustainable energy futureThe world energy consumption is going to rise by nearly 50% in 2050 when compared to 2010. With conventional and unconventional reserves depleting, demand for energy supply is rising. The feasibility and the current efficiency of renewable energy sources may not be capable of satisfying the world energy demand by themselves. Increase in production of non-renewable energy source, i.e., the fossil fuels may help to fulfill the energy requirement of future generations. Shale gas is one of the unconventional sources of energy. Shale gas deposits are scattered all over the planet in low-permeability and low porosity reservoirs. India has overall reserves of shale gas between 600 and 2000 TCF, of which 63 TCF is of recoverable shale gas (Pradhan and Prakash 2000). Shale production depends on many factors such as political matters, wars, social and economic aspects, and exploration techniques. Depending on the recoverable reserve (RR), production of shale gas entails different methods and ...

Deep decarbonisation and diversification of the energy mix are priorities to combat increasing emissions and climate change in India. Becoming a natural gas-based economy by increasing its share to 15 per cent in the primary energy mix by 2030 is important to India’s energy strategy. Historically, India and other countries have faced high gas prices. High prices and shortages in domestic gas supply have dampened the pace of gas infrastructure addition in the country and necessitate the formulation of a priority sector allocation policy. With the discovery of shale gas reserves in the US, there has been an observable global shift from a high to low gas price regime in the last few years; this is likely to continue in the long term. In this context, our study aims at answering the following research questions: (i) How will natural gas penetration evolve in India in high versus low gas price regimes? (ii) What would be the implication of removing the gas allocation regime? (iii) Would ...
