EarthLink DSL Installation Instructions

Step 1: Install DSL Modem

Step1

1 Ethernet Cable (Yellow): Insert one end of the Ethernet cable found in your DSL kit into your computer’s Ethernet port, and the other end into the modem’s yellow Ethernet port.

If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port, please refer to the EarthLink Support section of this guide for further instructions.

2 Dual-Jack DSL Filter (White): Insert the dual-jack DSL filter into the phone jack nearest your computer.

3 Phone Cord (Gray): Insert one end of the phone cord found in your DSL kit into the gray side of the dual-jack DSL filter, and the other end into the modem’s gray DSL port.

4 Power Supply (Black): Plug a surge protector into the nearest electrical outlet. Plug the power supply into the surge protector and insert the other end into the modem’s Power port.

5 TURN ON THE MODEM.

Step 2: Install DSL Filters

Step2

Because your DSL signal is active on every phone jack in your home, you will need to install a DSL filter wherever you have something plugged into a jack. This includes any phone, answering machine, fax machine, or TiVo®. DSL filters will reduce the interference between these devices and your DSL signal.

In Step 1, you installed a dual-jack DSL filter. If you want to use a phone in this location, insert its phone cord into the black side of the dual-jack DSL filter (see Fig. A). For all other phone jacks:

1 Unplug the phone cord from the phone jack.

2 Insert a DSL filter* (Tan) into the phone jack.

3 Insert the phone cord into the DSL filter.

4 Check for a dial tone.

5 Repeat steps for each phone (or other device) in your home.

*If you require more than the three DSL filters included with this kit, please refer to the EarthLink Support section of this guide for further instructions.

Step 3: Set Up Modem & INSTALL SOFTWARE

HOUSEHOLDS WITH ALARM SYSTEMS
If you have an alarm system, please contact your alarm monitoring service to inform them of your DSL installation. This is recommended to ensure optimum DSL performance.

ADDITIONAL DSL HARDWARE
If you do not have an Ethernet Port (Step 1):
• If your computer doesn't have an Ethernet port, then you'll need to get an Ethernet adapter (or NIC) in order to complete the DSL setup. You can find an Ethernet adapter at any computer or electronic store.

If you do not have a surge protector (Step 1):
• While EarthLink strongly recommends a surge protector, it’s not required to complete setup.

If you run out of DSL filters for your telephones and other devices (Step 2):
• Unplug any remaining phones that do not have a DSL filter installed, as they may interfere with your DSL signal.
• Additional DSL filters for wall-mounted phones, dual-line phones, and other devices can be purchased from a computer or electronics store.

EARTHLINK HOME NETWORKING SETUP ASSISTANCE

TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR DSL MODEM CONNECTION
If the Power light on your modem does not turn steady green after turning the modem on:
• Check the power supply. Is the modem connected to a live electrical outlet? Are the connections secured?

If your modem is unable to connect to the Internet:
• Make sure the DSL phone cord you are using is the one provided with your DSL modem and that it is directly connected to the dual-jack DSL filter.
• Power-cycle: Turn off and unplug your modem then shut down and turn off your computer for 30 seconds. Plug the modem back in and turn your modem on, wait 30 seconds, and then turn on your computer.
• Make sure your modem is not on or near other electronic devices such as your computer monitor, speakers, a cordless phone (handset or base), or a halogen light. These devices may interfere with your DSL signal.
• Some phones may cause interference even after installing DSL filters. Try unplugging all the phones in your home and power-cycling your modem and computer.

If you still can’t reach Fig. B in Step 3:
• Make sure your computer is set to use a dynamic or server-assigned IP address.
