Dozens of people died and hundreds of buildings were destroyed when a strong earthquake struck Japan's west coast on New Year's Day.
The 7.5 magnitude tremor was centered on the main island's Noto Peninsula and collapsed numerous buildings nearby. People were trapped under the rubble as crews worked quickly to free as many as possible.
The quake also triggered landslides and sparked a fire in the city of Wajima, burning an entire section of the town to the ground.
As you can see in the photos above, a lengthy recovery will be necessary for those affected by the earthquake.
