Will reality tv last for much longer?

Reality TV has become one of the most popular genres of television. We are obsessed with watching others live their daily lives or compete in compositions. There’s drama, gossip, and never a dull moment. From Dance’s Moms, Jersey Shore, Sister Wives, and Big Brother to Catfish, the list of these shows is never ending. They are constantly playing on different channels making it impossible to miss one. People have mixed views on reality television, either they hate it or love it. Most of reality television is fake and mostly staged. An example of this is the popular show Jersey Shore. In one of the final season episodes of the show, one of the main cast members, Snooki, had a drink thrown at her by the bar tender. If you observe closely you can see a random hand chucking the drink at her. The second instinct is Man vs. Wild. Bear Grylls stayed in a hotel every night but he allegedly was in the wild. Another reason why people hate reality TV is because it brings out the worst in people. On shows like The Amazing Race, Survivor, Project Runway, and America’s Next Top Model we see liars, bullying, and backstabbers. Showing this type of behavior on national TV shows that acting that way is socially acceptable. It encourages bad behavior in real life amongst the young viewers. Emily Ramous quotes “I believe that reality TV is all staged. It isn’t really reality. It is just used a money maker and a catalyst to teach society different ways to act.” Even though there are many more cons to reality television there are also a solid amount of pros. Reality TV has a diverse group of people unlike a lot of common TV shows. Every minority is represented in this genre of television. A good example of this is Big Brother. Big brother has contestants from all walks of life. When it comes to reality TV, I always will have a mixed opinion on it. It is a nice source of entertainment but it should not run people’s lives in the real world.
