Soon, the area around Gateway of India in Mumbai will get a facelift. The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) has approved the revamp plan. Considered as one of the most prominent tourist attractions in Mumbai, the Grade-I heritage structure belongs from the British era.

The Gateway of India, overlooking the Arabian Sea, was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. But as of now, the view gets blocked by a plaza right at the entrance and the main aim of revamping is to clear the view of the monument and Shivaji Maharaj statue. According to the reports, the project is likely to cost INR 20 crore.

An official from the BMC said, “The new design will ensure visual access to visitors so that people can see the Gateway of India, the sea and will get a chance to see the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which is currently lost in all the visual clutter.”

The MHCC has given no-objection certificate (NOC) to the BMC to do the necessary changes. Though the concerned building is quite old, it is not a listed heritage building. The MHCC in its approval, recently stated, “The proposed structures of ticketing, security office and toilet shall be kept as narrow and as small as possible, in terms of footprint and appearance. Maximum effort shall be made to open up the view of the existing ‘Customs Building’ which is part of the original setting of the Gateway of India site.”
