KOLKATA: Former Bengal cricketer Palash Nandy will be bestowed with the CAB Lifetime Achievement award on the association's annual awards function day this year. The 65-year-old former cricketer also led and coached Bengal along with being the manager of the Bengal Ranji Trophy winning team in 1989-90.
After hanging up his boots, Nandy made a name for himself as a coach too. He is currently the coach of Mohun Bagan club.
CAB president Sourav Ganguly said number of names were considered by the Trustee Board for this year's award. "But keeping in mind his (Nandy's) seniority and overall contribution to Bengal cricket, the Trustee Board members have decided to bestow the award on him."
The elder of the Nandy brothers (younger brother Pranab is also a cricketer-turned-coach), Palash is a highly-respected name in the Kolkata maidan. A right-handed batsman and right-arm off-break bowler, Nandy made his First Class debut in 1969-70 and scored 3208 runs in 51 matches over a period of 14 years of his first-class playing career. His highest score in first-class match was 205 runs. He played a 97-run innings against a touring England side in 1981-82.
"I never expected to win such an honour in my life. I would like to give credit to my childhood coach Pulak Biswas and my mother for getting me into cricket," he said.
Like any other Bengali, Nandy too began as a footballer.
"Football was always my first love," he told a website. "But it has been a great journey playing alongside the likes of Shyam Sunder Mitra and former India stars Dilip Doshi, Pankaj Roy and others," he stated.
