Interesting Facts About Lord Hanuman
As the Hindu deity known for love, compassion, devotion, strength and intelligence, Lord Hanuman is one of the most widely worshiped Gods of this faith. Many people are seen devoting their Tuesdays to the worship of Lord Hanuman. India is filled with perhaps the grandest temples of Hanuman in every corner.
We know that Lord Hanumana is one of the central figures of Hindu epic, Ramayana.
The character and life sketch of Hanuman told us everything we need to know about ‘pawan putra’, son of air. But, there are still many shocking facts that we are yet to discover.
Many of us don’t know the real meaning of the name ‘Hanuman’. In Sanskrit, ‘Hanu’ means ‘jaw’ and ‘mana’ means ‘disfigured’. This name describes the incident when Hanumana, the notorious kid with powers, flew to the sun thinking that it’s a fruit. Angered Lord Indra threw Hanuman back to the Earth and He ended up with a disfigured jaw.
For being too notorious, Hanuman was cursed by a sage and He forgot all his divine powers. A lot later, only upon Jambhavantha call to remember did Hanuman release his strengths which He then used to save Ma Sita.
When Ma Sita told Hanuman that she applied Sindoor (vermillion) for the long life of Lord Rama, Hanuman smeared Himself in Sindoor with a hope that this will extend Lord Rama’s life even more. Such was His devotion to Lord Rama. Many use a saffron colour vermillion during Hanuman Puja.
In spite of the bond between Ram and Hanuman, the two were once forced to fight a battle against each other. Once, Guru Vishwamitra ordered Lord Ram to Kill Yayati who had already sought refuge in the strengths of Hanuman. He who believed that anyone and everyone who seeks his refuge should be saved, agreed to fight a battle with Lord Rama. However, He did not use any weapons. He only chanted Lord Rama’s name and no arrow could touch Him. This impressed Guru Vishwamitra who then ordered Rama to withdraw from the killing stint of Yayati.
The Hanuman Chalisa mentioned the distance between the Sun and the Earth long before science did. This also proves the scientific and fact oriented saga of Lord Hanuman.
