Sonalee was born in a Maharashtrian-Punjabi family at the army cantonment of Khadki near Pune. Her father Manohar Kulkarni is a retired army doctor who has been working for 30 years and rendering his service to the Army. Her mother Savinder worked at COD in Pune at Dehu Road. Sonalee has done masters in Mass Communication from Indira School Of Communication. She also has a younger brother who runs an event company.

Sonalee is a trained dancer in Bharatnatyam. She started learning dance at an early age of five and now she is one of the most efficient and established dancers other than being an actor. She came into limelight with her dance in 'Apsara Aali' from the movie 'Natrang'. People loved her dance so much that she is lovingly named as Apsara since then.
