Short film on mental health blurs the fine line between sinking and survival
Mental health is a tricky subject and not many Bengali films have dealt with it or explored the issue successfully. Sadly, in our society, our conversations on mental health are often pushed under the carpet and we are not even encouraged to discuss it or seek help. The issue of mental health showed its ugly face yet again since Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
Now, Tanni Chaudhuri, a passionate filmmaker and also a associate professor at Rhode Island College near Boston, has come up with a hard-hitting short film on the issue of mental health.
Titled ‘Threshold’, the short stars Rishav Basu, Aparajita Yolmo, Paramita Sen, Shankar Debnath, Satakshi Nandy, Palash Chaturvedi, Anangsha Biswas and Krishnendu Ghosh in pivotal roles. The shooting of ‘Threshold’ was recently wrapped up in Howrah.

Giving a peek into the short film’s core concept, Tanni Chowdhury explains, “As a filmmaker, you often take upon human perspectives around you. This time it was different-I wanted to be a seeker. Navigating the social life around me, I wanted to find a home that has not known anxiety, depression, stress, or any other manifestations of mental health. Because I couldn’t find one, in my mind I found the house of Dr. A, the house brings together unique social identities in the aftermath of the battles they once were a part of. For me, Threshold is a directorial statement that presents the fine line between sinking and survival. In my hope of reaching out to many, I choose survival.”
If all goes according to plan, the short will soon start its festival journey around the world.
