Haryana government wants to bring Blue Line metro to Gurugram

GURUGRAM: Days after it announced an extension of the Yellow Line in Gurugram with 25 new stations, the Haryana government has now floated a proposal to bring Delhi Metro’s Blue Line to the city.

The proposal came up for discussion during a recent GMDA meeting in Chandigarh. According to sources, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar not only expressed his interest in the proposal but also asked for a study on it.
A senior GMDA official who was part of the meeting said the main idea was to connect the two metro lines. “As of now, the plan is to approach Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and ask them to extend the Blue Line till Bijwasan (on the border), which can then be linked to Gurugram metro (the Yellow Line extension) in Sector 23,” said the official.
The official added that the project could be executed on the same lines as DMRC’s Green Line extension till Bahadurgarh, where the state takes care of the funding and DMRC is the implementing agency. The distance between the last station on the Blue Line in Dwarka Sector 21 and Bijwasan is only around 5km, and the distance from Bijwasan to Sector 23 is 3.5km. In total, it would require DMRC to build an 8-9km metro corridor for the project.
Theoretically, this would mean the Blue Line connecting two sides of NCR — Noida (Electronic City) and Ghaziabad (Vaishali) with Gurugram Sector 23 — though whether that eventually may not end up as the fastest way of commuting between the NCR cities.
If the project succeeds, it will, without doubt, provide a major connectivity boost for commuters in the city as well as other parts of NCR by opening a second metro corridor to Gurugram from Delhi to supplement the Yellow Line that terminates at Huda City Centre and is currently the only metro connection between the neighbouring cities.
TOI had earlier reported that the proposed Yellow Line extension — a loop from Huda City Centre to Cyber City — might be extended to connect with Rapid Metro as well as the proposed Rapid Rail (RRTS) corridor. The proposal has been approved by the CM, and GMDA is conducting a feasibility study of stations along the connecting route. RRTS and the Yellow Line extension are likely to be connected at the proposed RRTS-metro station at Dundahera.
The final project report for the Yellow Line extension was approved by the CM in Chandigarh last Monday. It will cost approximately Rs 5,126 crore.
