Jagdish Temple Udaipur : A Visual and Mesmerizing Experience

After my visit to the Canbay resort I was ready for a spiritual experience in the form of my visit to the Jagdish Temple Udaipur. This Hindu temple is located inside the City Palace and was built by Mahrana Jagat Singh in 1651 AD and is dedicated to lord Laxmi Narayan who is called as the preserver of the world. The three storied mesmerizing temple is built in the Indo-Aryan style of architecture. The gateway can be discerned even from a distance of 150 meters. This wonderful architecture has beautiful pillars with intricate carvings, decorated ceilings and walls which are painted very beautifully.

The main temple has a spire which is 79 meter high and the shikhar is decorated with sculptures of elephants, dancers, musicians and horsemen. The first and second story of the temple has 50 pillars each. As I was entering the temple two magnificently huge Stone elephants at the entrance welcomed me and at the front of the temple werea stone slab which had inscriptions imprinted on it. Inorder to reach the main shrine Ihad to climb at least 32 steps of marble and here I also found a brass image of Garuda, who is the vahana of Lord Vishnu. It seemed as if the huge brass idol of Garuda was guarding the entrance of the inner sanctum. The Idol of Lord Vishnu with its four arms is deified in the inner sanctum and this idol is carved out of one single piece of black stone. This main idol is encircled by four shrines which are quite smaller and are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Shakti and the Sun God.

After taking the blessings of lord Jagdish I was ready for my next adventure which was a treat for my stomach, yes, the local and most famous dish of Udaipur and that dish was Dal Bati Churma.
