Aloe ferox is a perennial woody evergreen succulent plant in the aloe family, Aloeaceae. A. ferox is endemic to South Africa and is commonly known as bitter or cape aloe. The plant is single-stemmed and is capable of growing up to 10 feet tall at maturity. Leaves are large, thick, and triangularly shaped in a dense rosette formation. Individual leaves measure up to 3 feet in length and are bluish green with brownish red spines along the margins. Flowers are tubular, bright red, and bloom from late autumn to mid-winter. Aloe ferox is primarily grown as an ornamental crop, but is also grown for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. The gel located within the leaves is used topically to treat burn wounds, or can be consumed in large quantities for a laxative effect. It is also commonly used as an ingredient in skin moisturizers and other skin care products. The plant thrives in well-draining sandy soil, sitting in full sun to partial shade. Water adequately during summer months when plants are actively growing and water sparingly during winter as this species is prone to rot if roots are left constantly moist, especially during cold periods. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 12a.

Plant the Aloe ferox seeds on top of a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds and keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. Germinating pots should be kept indoors and out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 75°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 months to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
