The Spring Temple Buddha is the world’s second tallest statue with a height of 128m (420 ft) depicting Vairochana Buddha.
It is located in the Zhaocun Township of Lushan County, Henan, China.
The statue was completed in 2008.
The statue stands on the 25 metres (82 ft) lotus throne, which if included, makes the height reach a staggering 153 m (502 ft).
Two new structures, the “Diamond Seat” and the “Sumeru Seat” have been added underneath the statue, by literally reshaping the hill on which the statue stands.
The construction of the Spring Temple Buddha was announced after the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan by the Taliban in 2001, which was condemned by the Chinese government at the time.
The Spring Temple Buddha derives its name from the nearby Tianrui hot spring, whose water, at 60 °C (140 °F), is renowned in the area for its curative properties.
The Buddha itself is huge and is made from 108kg of gold, 3,300 tonnes of copper alloy and 15,000 tonnes of steel.
