Zamindari of Rabindranath
_ The least discussed part of Rabindranath Tagore's life is his Zamindari.
Although he said, 'Zamindari is my profession and Asmandari is my
passion', but he was a very successful zamindar as records say. Tagore
Estate's zamindari was spread over Birahiimpur pargana of undivided
Nadia (now Silaidaha of Kustia), Yusufsahi pargana of Pabna ( now
Sazadpur), Kaligram pargana of Rajsahi ( now Patisar of Naogan), Orissa
and Bihar.
Responsibilities of Tagore estate's zamindari was bestowed upon Rabindranath on 8th August of 1896 by his prudent father Maharshi Debendranath as he depended on his youngest son very much. Agriculture on cooperative system, establishment of Agricultural Bank for his ryots, business of jute etc. were his steps taken as zamindar. After division of zamindari, Rabindranath had got Kaligram in his part. Silaidaha, Sazadpur and Patisar ( now in Bangladesh) can easily be accessed from Kustia. In all three places the Kuthibaris have been protected as memorable monuments. Rabindranath went to Patisar in 1937 for the last time. The local people of Patisar still remember him not as a poet but as the 'Babumashai'. |
