Lugano is a colourful Swiss city located in the north of the lake of the same name, in the center of the Italian canton of Ticino. Every year, thousands of tourists tend to feel the atmosphere, stroll through the Old Town, flowering parks, visit ancient church buildings and touch the art.

Simultaneously with the tourist attractiveness, Lugano is a large-scale financial center, a venue for various business conferences and seminars. The city is famous for its landscaped viewpoints, ancient streets in the Italian style, many museums and picturesque nature. Travelers are attracted by the unique atmosphere with the Italian mood - what is called dolce farniente, or pleasant doing nothing, in Lugano can be felt to the fullest.

 

Climate in Lugano

A favorable climate with sunny summers and mild winters disposes to travel all year round. The air temperature in summer is +26-27 ° C, which due to the low humidity feels comfortable for the wave. In winter, there is practically no snow, the average temperature is +2 ° C.

Nature

In the landscapes of Lugano, a classic alpine picture comes to life - the city is framed on both sides by the monte mountains of Monte Monte and San Salvatore, at the foot of which the majestic Lake Lugano (the second name is Ceriso) spills with a mirror surface. The mild climate favorably contributes to the lush natural diversity: camellias and magnolias bloom in the parks in spring, majestic cedars, centuries-old pines and eucalyptus trees coexist with tropical palm trees and bamboo. Even a simple walk along the embankments and streets of the city gives the eye aesthetic pleasure.

Sights

Lake Lugano itself is worthy of special attention. Panoramic cruises on the ship during the day or evening walks in the lights of the night city will not leave indifferent even an experienced traveler. Mysterious wild forests on the slopes of the mountains, picturesque bays, water surface reflecting clear skies, red tiled roofs among the green riot of nature - the lake is rightly called the "Swiss pearl".

Mount San Salvatore

The mountain rises to 900 meters above sea level. From the top there is a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake and the city. Here you can get on the funicular, the ascent will take no more than 15 minutes. Special hiking trails have also been developed - lovers of mountain walks can enjoy the views by walking along the ridge to the coastal town of Marcot.

Historical center

The old town of Lugano is a concentration of unique ancient buildings and churches. The combination of Italian Renaissance styles is readable in every detail. In the evenings, life comes to life especially alive here - summer areas of restaurants with cozy tables, lanterns and live music create a unique atmosphere.

Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli

The church is located in the heart of the historical part of the city, was built in the XVI century. The main feature is the unique fresco of the artist Luini - a student of the great Leonardo Da Vinci. The fresco of 30 * 12 meters depicts the scene of the Crucifixion, impressing with the scale and drawing of the smallest details.

Civico Park

The picturesque alleys of the park are an ideal place for leisurely walks. The huge territory of the park, including villa Ciani and Palazzo Civico, will allow you to enjoy nature and an atmosphere conducive to relaxation. Cuisine of Lugano

Restaurants and cafes of Lugano are famous for their authentic cuisine, gastronomic delights of the best chefs and a special atmosphere. Impeccable service, unique panoramic views from the terraces, rare culinary solutions - all these aspects attract thousands of visitors. Italy has had a significant impact on gastronomy – many restaurants offer classic Italian cuisine.

Traditional rabbit meat dishes are a visiting card of local institutions. The most original recipe is considered a stew of pickled rabbit. The world-famous ravioli in Lugano are prepared in more than 10 variations, not excluding dessert fillings from fruits and even Swiss chocolate. It is impossible to imagine the cuisine of Lugano without classic and original recipes for pasta and risotto. Locals also recommend each guest to try the national dish - cheese polenta. The signature treat of the Swiss are fried chestnuts,which grow only in this region. They can be bought as a snack in small stalls.

An integral part of the life of the canton of Ticino is winemaking:grapes were grown here in the Roman era. Swiss wines, especially dry ones, have gained quite a loud reputation in the world of winemakers. Therefore, the best recommendation for cheese fondue or raclette will be a glass of cold Swiss white wine.

Lugano. How to get there

Lugano is located near the border with Italy, the nearest major city is the world shopping center - Milan. The trip from Milan will take about an hour and a half, trains run throughout the day. You can also use the transfer from the hotel or rent a car at Milan airport.

The journey from Zurich by train will take twice as long. In Lugano itself there is an airport where flights from Zurich and Geneva are available.
