Vedanta-Facor plant fire mishap in Odisha: 2nd worker succumbs to burn injuries

Bhadrak: A worker undergoing treatment in a hospital in Mumbai after being seriously injured in a fire mishap at Vedanta-Facor Plant at Randia in Bhadrak district died.

The deceased Vedanta worker was Bijay Mohapatra of Aranji village under Bant block in Bhadrak district. He was under treatment at the National Burns Hospital in Mumbai. He succumbed to burn injuries yesterday.

Sources said that the body will be brought to Bhadrak tomorrow following autopsy in Mumbai today.

Bijay was among two workers grievously injured in the fire mishap. Earlier, his fellow worker Ratikant Sutar from Randia area had died during the treatment. The death of second worker triggered tension at his village as well as Vedanta-Facor’s Randia plant.

According to reports, two workers sustained injuries after fire sparkles fell on them at the Vedanta-Facor plant on April 11. The duo was initially shifted to Bhadrak DHH and later taken to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. They were airlifted to Mumbai for treatment after their conditions deteriorated. However, Ratikant lost his life on April 16 night.

Following the incident, the Bhadrak district administration on April 12 had clamped Section 144 of the CrPC at and around 200 metre radius of the industrial complex. The prohibitory order was extended for the second time till 6 AM of April 19 following first casualty.

In view of gravity of situation following death of the second worker, the district administration further extended the promulgation of prohibitory order till April 25.
