Nandigram, Godhra '˜worst scars' for us
Protests against the state government have spilled on to the streets

New Delhi: The West Bengal government has come in for serious criticism from National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairperson Justice S Rajendra Babu who said Nandigram was one of the “worst scars” on the face of the nation.

Terming the situation in the Bengal block as “grave”, he said, “Nandigram and Godhra are severe assaults on the face of democracy. They are the worst scars on the face of our nation. It is shameful to see that human rights were violated in such a way.”

He said the NHRC was committed to protect the rights of the people, who were victims of “opportunist” politics in both the states. “The State Human Rights Commission in West Bengal is actively involved in taking up the case to its course, which it had done at the time of Gujarat riots,” he said on the sidelines of Fourth Annual Meeting of NHRC with State Human Rights Commissions.

“The Calcutta High Court has already condemned the attack on farmers and given a tight slap on the face of the government,” he said. Justice Babu said he would talk to the Bengal chief secretary to assess the situation in Nandigram.

Asked about the failure of the state government in handling the situation, he refused to comment but said it is up to the governments to decide what is best in the interest of the people and the state. “I can’t comment on the government action or inaction. What they have done or are going to do is not for me to comment. I would only say it is tragic to see such kind of things happening in our country,” he said. “On our  part, we are as sorry for the state of the affairs as most other people in the country. We condemn such attacks,” he added.

  SC DISMISSES PIL

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking direction to the Centre to take action against the West Bengal government for the Nandigram violence based on the report of Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

A bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said it could not pass any such direction since the matter was already under the scanner of the National Human Rights Commission. “When the NHRC is already looking into the matter, how many other forum you (petitioner) want?” the bench asked, dismissing the PIL filed by one Kedar Chand Yadav.
