Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. As complicated it might sound, the temple is as complicated to understand. This is one of the oldest temples in the India dating 7th Century A.D. This is one of the most religious places for the Hindus in the Tamil region of India and apparently is one of my favourite holiday hotspots. Dedicated to the fish eyed Goddess Meenakshi, this temple attracts millions of visitors from all across the globe.

The very first time I had been to this temple, I was barely 2 years old. History has it that this temple has over 10,000 idols of various Gods and Goddesses in their 4 entrances which are called “Gopurams”. The temple is in the historic city of Madurai and the architectural design of the city is lotus shaped with the temple being the central point.

The temple boasts of so many places of ancient mythology . For eg. the 1000 pillar hall with sculptures of an ancient beast called “Yali”, The golden lotus tank which was a judging platform for scholastic work. They say authors during old times used to place their peice of work on the pond where only the scholarly articles remain afloat. Also one unique hall found in this temple is the Musical pillar hall. The pillars when struck produce a musical note. If I am about to go on with the temple’s specialities the blog would’nt be enough.

1000 pillar hall

I still have fond memories of the tasty Prasadams (which are nothing but food given to the devotees after it has been offered to the deity ) my family and I used to relish sitting near the footsteps of the Golden Lotus tank, staring at the beautiful Gopurams and listening to the hymns of the gods. It indeed is a feeling of peace, security, divineness and a very very relaxed getaway from the hustle and bustle from the Mumbai life. Do visit this UNESCO world heritage site with your group, I promise this will be like a never before experience!
