AgenciesIt is believed becoming a parent is one the biggest joys of the world, but it turned into a nightmare for Bollywood couple Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover.
The couple had to go through a series of hardships after they welcomed their daughter Devi in November 2022.
Talking to actress Neha Dhupia on an Instagram Live session during the weekend, Basu revealed that the new parents found out their then three-year-day-old daughter was born with two holes in her heart.
"Our journey has been different from any normal mother-father. It has been a lot tougher than the smile that I have on my face right now. I wouldn't wish this to happen to any mother. I got to know on the third day of me having a baby that our baby is born with two holes in her heart," the new mother could be heard saying.
The 44-year-old mom said that when the new parents first heard of ventricular septal defect (VSD), they didn't even know what it was. VSD is a birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart.
"I thought I'll not share this, but I'm sharing this because I feel that there are a lot of mothers who helped me in this journey, and it was very difficult to find those mothers. When you give birth to your child, you don't think there could be anything wrong with your child, and we were the same... We didn't even understand what a VSD is... We went through a crazy period. We didn't discuss this with our family, we both were in a little bit of a blur," she added.
Their daughter's medical condition left the couple "numb," and they didn't even share the news with their parents immediately. It took them 40 days to process the reality. "We wanted to celebrate but we were a little numb, me and Karan... You feel so sad, burdened, and conflicted because how can you put such a small child in open heart surgery," she recalled the rough phase they had to go through.
Basu revealed that the first five months with Devi had been "very difficult" for the parent of a newborn. They decided to get open-heart surgery when the child is three-months-old.
"But Devi has been fabulous from day one. We were told that every month, we have to do a scan to know if it's healing on its own. But with the kind of large hole that she had, we were told that it was doubtful (that the hole will close), you will have to go through surgery. And the surgery is best done, when the child is three months old," she shared.
Although the open-heart surgery was a success, the six-hour-long procedure got the new parents very anxious. "Karan was a mess," Bipasha Basu said when their daughter was going into surgery.
A teary Basu revealed that they decided to secure their child's future. She urged the parent whose newborns were born with VSD to go ahead with the surgery. "If you love your child, you must get this done because then your child's future is secure," she added.
Terming the ordeal as "an isolating phase of my life," the actress said that sharing her experience and talking about it publicly made her feel lighter. She also said that they have stepped into normalcy. "It feels so nice and light to just take her on a holiday, go to a friend's house where she can play with animals freely," she added.
